Tiger and Magpie1

This twelve-panel folding screen is painted with an elaborate scene of hunters riding and running across a landscape of wide fields and tall mountains. Since the figures are primarily clad in Chinese-style clothing, the screen is believed to show the influence of the hunting culture of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Visualizing the dauntless spirit and courage of hunters, such paintings often adorned military facilities or the personal quarters of military officials. But they were also sometimes hung in private homes to ward off evil spirits.
